NOTICE OF PROPERTY TAX INCREASE

The Seminole County Board of Commissioners has tentatively adopted a millage rate which will require an increase in property taxes by 1.60 percent.  All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase to be held at the Seminole County Courthouse located at 200 South Knox Avenue, Donalsonville, GA in the Superior Courtroom on Monday, October 3, 2016 at 6:00 p.m.

Times and places of additional public hearings on this tax increase are at the Seminole County Courthouse located at 200 South Knox Avenue, Donalsonville, GA in the Superior Courtroom on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m

This tentative increase will result in a millage rate of 13.743 mills, an increase of 0.217 mills. Without this tentative tax increase, the millage rate will be no more than 13.526 mills.  The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $100,000 is approximately $8.25 and the proposed tax increase for nonhomestead property with a fair market value of $300,000 is approximately $26.04.

PRESS RELEASE:

The Seminole County Board of Commissioners today announces its intention to increase the property taxes it will levy this year by 1.60 percent over the rollback millage rate.

Each year, the board of tax assessors is required to review the assessed value for property tax purposes of taxable property in the county to re-determine the value of such property and adjust the assessment. This is called a reassessment. Following this reassessment, the current countywide digest indicates an overall increase in gross taxable properties.

When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia law requires that a rollback millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year’s digest that last year’s millage rate would have produced had no reassessments occurred.

The budget adopted by the Seminole County Board of Commissioners requires a millage rate higher than the rollback millage rate; therefore, before the Seminole County Board of Commissioners may finalize their tentative budget and set a final millage rate, Georgia law requires three public hearings to be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on the increase.

All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase to be held at the Seminole County Courthouse, Superior Courtroom, 200 South Knox Avenue, Donalsonville, GA on October 3, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. and October 11, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.  In the event the courtroom is unavailable, a notice of meeting location will be posted on the front door and handicap entrance of the courthouse.
